Let’s talk E-Bikes/E-Motor devices!
Recently, we’ve received several concerns regarding the use of e-bikes within our community. The influx of e-bikes and other e-motor devices (scooters, unicycles, mini bikes, etc.) is something being seen not only here in Fortville, but in communities nationwide. These devices have become extremely popular and are used daily on sidewalks and roadways.
With their increasing presence comes increased responsibility. Unfortunately, we have observed/been notified some individuals—especially juveniles (under 18)—operating these devices in an unsafe or reckless manner.
The Town of Fortville is currently in the process of amending local ordinances to include regulations for e-bikes and other e-motor devices. Once completed, individuals who operate these devices improperly may be subject to ordinance violations, fines, confiscation, or towing.
We expect all riders to operate e-bikes and e-motor devices safely and responsibly, including:
* Wearing proper safety gear
* Following traffic signs and signals
* Obeying posted speed limits
* Using due regard for pedestrians when riding on sidewalks
Downtown Usage:
If you are visiting Main Street on an e-bike or e-motor device, we strongly recommend walking it through the downtown area. Foot traffic can be heavy at times, with pedestrians frequently entering and exiting businesses.
Our goal is to keep motorists and pedestrians safe—and, most importantly, to ensure the safety of those operating these e-bikes and e-motor devices.
