FORTVILLE - HANCOCK COUNTY, IN - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) joined city officials and contracting partners today for a ceremonial ribbon cutting to mark the opening of U.S. 36 through Fortville.
"We have appreciated the community's continued patience throughout this project," said INDOT East Central District Deputy Commissioner Val Cockrum. "These improvements will provide safety benefits for drivers and pedestrians on U.S. 36."
The U.S. 36 reconstruction project began in March 2023 and officially opened to traffic following Friday's ribbon cutting. The project delivers improvements related to pedestrian mobility and driver safety by adding ADA-accessible sidewalks, crosswalks, dedicated turn lanes, and a reduced permanent speed limit of 30 mph.
"We are thrilled to welcome visitors to our town," said Fortville Town Council President Tonya Davis. "A heartfelt thank you to the business owners and community members for their patience throughout the construction process. This project has transformed our town's entrance, making it a place worth slowing down for - to enjoy everything we have to offer."
The project also included new storm sewers and roadside beautification within construction limits. The contract was awarded to Milestone Contractors L.P. in late 2022.
