August 13th, 2025: Impaired Driver Arrested Near Mt. Vernon Schools During Morning Drop-Off

MEDIA RELEASE

Subject: Impaired Driver Arrested Near Mt. Vernon Schools During Morning Drop-Off

At approximately 8:15 a.m. this morning, during student drop-off at Mt. Vernon Middle School, officers observed a vehicle driving off the roadway and onto the grass in front of the school.

When the vehicle reached the intersection of North 200 West and State Road 234, officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver failed to comply and continued westbound on SR 234. A traffic officer was able to intercept the vehicle and bring it to a safe stop.

Based on the driver’s behavior and observed actions, officers had probable cause to believe the individual was impaired. The driver—who is not affiliated with the school district as a student, parent, or employee—was taken into custody and transported to jail. Charges include Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, among others.

We commend our School Resource Officers and Traffic Division for their swift and professional response. Their actions helped ensure the safety of students, staff, and the broader community.

There is no ongoing threat to the public. All individuals involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
